Egypt is evolving as one of the major trading nations, and creates a wide range of opportunities for the logistics service providers. According to World Bank, Egypt has witnessed a huge surge in the logistics performance index (LPI), which improved 13 spots in 2016, from 62nd position in 2014. Many companies plan to shift their production line or expand the existing production line in Egypt. Further, the government aims to make the country a production and distribution hub to serve Europe and the Middle East & Africa, and Egypt Vision 2030 entitled economic development as a major segment, which includes development of the transportation infrastructure. The increasing market penetration of companies and construction activities are expected to create a demand for project and contract logistics.

MARITIME TRANSPORT - AN OCEAN OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOGISTICS SERVICE PROVIDERS
Due to its strategic geographic location, Egypt has great access to the Mediterranean Sea on one side and Red Sea on the other, which makes the maritime sector of the country the most important in Africa. Almost 90% of the country’s international trade flow (in terms of volume) occurs through sea transport, which is an effective contribution to the nation’s economy. Egypt, under the plan ‘Vision 2030’, aims to increase the handling capacity of ports to 370 million metric ton by 2030, from 120 million metric ton. Major developments include - the construction of port terminals by Red Sea Ports Authority and the development of Port Said. Moreover, the Suez Canal, which is the artificial waterway, connects the Mediterranean Sea with Red sea. More than 10% of world trade volume happens through the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal tolls are a major source of revenue. Further, Suez Canal Zone is expected to attract ~USD 30 billion in FDI for its infrastructure and logistics hubs in the next five years.

GOVERNMENT DEVELOPMENT PLANS & INITIATIVES - A KEY DRIVER
Owing to the strong trade that takes place throughout the region and proximity to Europe, Middle East, and Asia, Egypt has a robust future in the transportation & logistics segment. For instance, 8-10% of the global cargo passes through the Suez Canal, which creates a huge demand for logistics services, warehousing, and storage operations. Government of Egypt has been undertaking initiatives to make the country a global logistics hub and is encouraging foreign investments in various sectors. Some major transportation development projects were completed in 2017, which include the construction of the 40 km Shubra–Banha El road, construction of Benha axis on the Nile within the northern arch of the ring road at a cost of EGP 595 million. Furthermore, new economic ties have been made between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Both nations proposed to construct the Saudi-Egypt causeway, which costs around USD 3 billion, described as the largest project in the world. This step is expected to increase trading between the nations and support the logistics sector.
