North America is one of the most important regions in the world for sprinkler irrigation apart from Asia- Pacific and Europe. With the development in technology and increased availability of new technologies, the growth of sprinkler irrigation in the Asia-Pacific region is bright. Sprinkler Irrigation is best suited for most of the row crops like pulses and soft fruit etc., field crops, tree crops, and vine crops. The water can be sprayed either over or under the canopy of the crop. Though the sprinkler irrigation is employed maximum in the crop based applications, high-value crops are much considered owing to the high capital costs of investment. By type, the center pivot irrigation system is widely used for irrigation of most of the field crops, cereals, legumes, forage, and vegetables. It also has application is supplementary irrigation for rainfed grain. However, the cost of each system unit is comparatively high and is therefore economical to large irrigated farms.

North America Dominates the Market
The global market for sprinkler irrigation systems is predominantly dominated by North American region given its high value and large-scale agricultural sector. North America accounts for nearly 34-35% of the market. The regional demand is driven by the United States and Canada. The United States is not only the largest market in the region but also the largest market worldwide. More than half of the regional market is dominated by demand from the United States alone. Mexico, on the other hand, may provide the future growth opportunities due to increased farming activities and growing support from the government. In the US, as of 2015, 34,700 thousand acres of land is irrigated with sprinkler which accounts for 55% of the total irrigated area. Center pivot irrigation systems account for the majority of the market share in the country.

Government Promoting Water Saving Technologies Drives the Market
Sprinkler Irrigation is being supported by government organizations of various countries in order to encourage farmers to adopt this technology by providing various benefits/subsidies to farmers. The Government of India in its scheme Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, encourages the use of sprinkler irrigation in order to save water. Flexible Platform to improve farm scale water productivity (FIGARO) is a European research project co-funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) for increasing water productivity in crops which utilize large amounts of water and help in developing cost-effective irrigation platform.

17 separate organizations from eight countries, which include many commercial and academic leaders in the field of irrigation were involved in this project. It uses crop oriented management tool with DSS (Decision Supporting System) module to optimize irrigation and fertilizers dosing. Such initiatives and projects encourage by the government organizations drive the sprinkler irrigation market.

High Initial Set-Up and Maintenance Cost
The type of technology affects the choice of irrigation method to a greater extent. The high installation costs involved in the setting of the irrigation system in the field has been proven a detrimental factor for the industry. This factor is specifically restraining the market growth in the price-sensitive developing countries of South America and Asia-Pacific and the poor, underdeveloped countries of Africa. The purchase of equipment requires high capital investment per hectare. Also, a regular supply of fuel and spare parts must be maintained which together with the purchase of equipment may put a huge burden on the farmers and farming community.
