The amphoteric surfactants market was valued at US$1.384 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.21% over the forecast period to reach a total market size of US$2.110 billion by 2027.

Amphoteric surfactants are surface-active molecules that have both acidic and alkaline characteristics. There are two types of surfactants: betaines and real amphoteric surfactants based on fatty alkyl imidazolines.

Because amphoteric surfactants have an ionic charge, they can change between anionic, isoelectric neutral, and cationic characteristics depending on the pH. They are stable in the presence of electrolytes, acids, alkalis, and hard water. They are most commonly used in the personal care and cosmetics industries. The industrial revenue of soap and cleaning compound production in the United States is estimated to be approximately USD 35.51 billion in 2021, according to the US Census Bureau.

The market for amphoteric surfactants is being driven by increased demand for personal care products as well as rising demand for high-performance surfactants. Amphoteric surfactants have minimal toxicity, antimicrobial capabilities, low skin and eye irritation, are highly resistant to hard water and have excellent compatibility with different surfactants. Hence, it can be utilised in high-safety shampoo foaming agents, detergent fibre, cosmetics, microbicides, and other personal care items. Other possible applications include textile finishing auxiliaries, dyeing auxiliaries, dispersants, and dry cleaning agents. Although its price is a little expensive, some of the benefits listed above make the application sufficient in some situations to compensate for the shortcomings of the high price. According to the National Bureau of Statistics China, around 3.81 billion metres of garment fabric was manufactured in the country in December 2020. Throughout 2019 and 2020, the monthly textile manufacturing volume was consistently greater than three billion metres. Stringent regulations, on the other hand, are likely to limit their demand throughout the forecast period.

Due to increased demand from countries such as China and India, the Asia-Pacific region is projected to dominate the market for amphoteric surfactants over the forecast period. Because of their strong cleansing and lather properties, as well as their compatibility with a wide pH range, amphoteric surfactants are frequently employed in detergents and cleaning products. During the projected period, the market is likely to be driven by an increasing population as well as changes in lifestyle. India is one of the world's largest soap producers.  Furthermore, India has the largest rural population, accounting for around 65 % of the total population. The rising awareness of health and hygiene is projected to boost the market.

Growth Factors:

Increase in application of amphoteric surfactants in personal care:

Personal care is the most common application for amphoteric surfactants since they are an essential ingredient in skincare, haircare, and other personal care products. According to a report released by the Ministry of Economy and Industry, the beauty and personal care (BPC) industry in India is anticipated to exceed USD 10 billion by 2021, with an annual growth rate of 5% – 6%. The application of amphoteric surfactants in personal care is increasing due to increased urbanisation, an increase in the number of working women, changing lifestyles, and increased awareness regarding hygiene and skincare products.

Restrains:

Strict rules and restrictions:

Amphoteric surfactants derived from petrochemicals are subjected to a variety of chemical reactions which results in the emission of hazardous wastes and gases. These substances have the potential to harm the environment and human health. Hence, government agencies such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) apply different rules to address them. These authorities track and monitor toxicity levels to ensure they remain within acceptable limits. The strict regulations limit the overall market growth since petroleum-based amphoteric surfactants account for the majority of the market share.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Amphoteric Surfactants Market:

Consumers had been shut out for months due to COVID-19, international travel prohibitions had been enforced, and retail companies were forced to close. The purchase and consumption business of the beauty and personal care sector has changed drastically, and many beauty sectors' sales have declined. Fear of being infected, on the other hand, has fuelled an increasing urge to “kill and disinfect” when cleaning. During the pandemic, consumers increased their exposure to cleaning chemicals by cleaning more and spending more time at home. Thus, the market for amphoteric surfactants surged.

Key Developments:

  • The Solvay Group announced in January 2021 that it had reached an agreement with OpenGate Capital, a private equity group based in Los Angeles, to sell their North American and European amphoteric surfactant businesses.
  • Verdant Specialty Solutions, an amphoteric surfactant company, bought two speciality chemical makers from Chemical Services Group in July 2021.
  • BASF Care Chemicals North America stated in September 2021 that pricing for betaines and sulphate surfactants will be increased starting from October. Certain betaine, sulphate, and fatty alcohol product lines will see the list and off-list prices increase by US$0.02 to $0.09 per kg.
