Coal Mining in India to 2022 - Imports to decline as production capacity expands

Summary

India is endowed with vast mineral deposits including coal, iron ore, bauxite, manganese, copper, lead, zinc, and limestone. The country’s mining industry has great potential and provides basic raw materials to various industries including steel and power.India was the third-largest consumer of coal in 2017 with an estimated consumption of 890.2Mt. Coal consumption increased from 2000 to 2017, owing to strong demand from the domestic power sector, which accounted for an average 73% of the country’s total coal consumption during the same period.

Coal is predominantly consumed by the domestic power sector, while the steel and cement industries account for a nominal share.India had 315.1 billion tonnes (Bnt) of coal resources comprising proven, indicated, and inferred resources as of March 2017.Despite having vast reserves of non-coking coal, domestic coal production could not meet the demand during the review period (2000-2016), due to complexities in converting those reserves into production. Thus, India has gradually started to rely on imports, which have been chiefly sourced from Indonesia and Australia.

However, over the forecast period, coal imports are expected to shrink, supported by various government policies to boost country production, such as auctioning coal blocks to private companies, taking steps to ease clearances, and creating trouble free land acquisition and improved coal transportation facilities.

Some of the coal mining projects expected to commence operations through the forecast period include the Kapuria and Pachra Integrated mines in Jharkhand, Khadia Expansion and JalagamVengala Rao OC-II projects located in Madhya Pradesh and Telangana, and Hadla-Bhteyan project in Rajasthan.
