The Europe Biopesticides Market was valued at USD 742.0 million in 2017 and is expected to register a CAGR of 15.7% during the forecast period (2018 - 2023). Of all the regions, South America is expected to witness the fastest growth in the forecast period, recording a CAGR of 16.4%. In addition, the United States is likely to be the largest individual market over the forecast period.

Biopesticides are certain types of pesticides, derived from natural materials, such as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals. The study takes into consideration both microbial and organic pesticides. The market has been broadly segmented into bioinsecticide, bioherbicide, biofungicide, and others. Of all the countries, Spain accounted for largest share of about 25%, in 2017. Germany is expected to record the fastest growth. In the enrollment methodology of biopesticides in Europe, the regulations for synthetic pesticides and biopesticides are same. The circumstance brought about the need to present various new provisions in the legislation that aid the encouragement for enrollment of biopesticides.

The Major Growing Segment by Product - Biofungicides

The biofungicide segment accounted for 39% of the total market share in 2017. It’s quick decomposition and pollution and residue levels associated with synthetic pesticides drive the segment in the market studied. The registration process for biofungicides in Europe is difficult, when compared to the rest of the world. This is the main reason which is hindering the growth of the market. In 2017, the European public body applied for more biofungicide patents applications than companies. It applied for 59 patent applications in the biofungicide segment. This was clear indication that companies had to shift their focus toward the development of new products in the biofungicide segment.

Growing Demand for Food Safety and Quality

Prominent research studies have indicated that residual pesticides in food can cause health concerns, such as birth defects, nerve damage, cancer, and other effects that may take place over a prolonged time period, without immediate manifestations. These effects are dependent on toxicity levels in pesticides and the degree of exposure. Consumer awareness regarding the negative impacts of pesticides on human health have prompted consumers to demand accountability of environmental and social organizations in agriculture. Furthermore, several countries are now adopting a stringent approach pertaining to the quantity of imports, with a special focus on regulating the quantity of pesticide residues. As a result, the demand for regulated food safety and quality is increasing.

Slow Speed of Action

The speed at which biopesticides operate is very slow, as compared to most of the chemical pesticides. This is one of the major constraining factors faced by the farmers who use synthetic pesticides for their quick results. There is an increasing need to educate farmers about the mode of action of microbial pesticides and other biopesticides and their possible applications in integrated pest management systems. Due to their slow speed of action, biopesticides are usually defensive, rather than curative. Growers generally have a tendency to wait until the onset of symptoms before spending on crop protection, and thus, they require products with a definite level of curative action.

Key Developments of Europe Biopesticides Market
