    Report

  • January 2019
  • Region: Global
  • Primary Research Group

This 140-page study gives highly detailed data about college student intentions to take courses on the undergraduate and graduate level in education.  It also gives very specific information on college student intentions to pursue teacher certification, to teach in high school, mathematics/science education, grade school, early childhood education, or work in special education, educational administration or higher education administration.

Data in the reports is based on a representative sample of 1,566 full time undergraduates drawn from a representative sub-sample of 4-year colleges and universities including those on the BA/MA and research university level but excluding for-profit and special purposes colleges, as well as junior colleges.

The data in the report is presented in the aggregate and broken out by 18 variables including type, size and tuition level of the college of the survey participant, and age, gender, sexual orientation, year of class standing, college major or likely major, regional origins, SAT/ACT scores, college grades and other characteristics of the survey participant.

The report enables its readers to pinpoint what type of student is most interested in special education, or in mathematics/science education, or to find the demographic profile of students planning to attend graduate school in education, or to obtain teacher certification.

Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

  • 13.75% of survey participants who grew up in the US West were interested or highly interested in careers in mathematics/science education, a far higher percentage than those in the Northeast, only 8.1%.
  • Mixed race respondents were far more likely than those from other racial groups to be interested in K-8 education, and nearly 22% were interested or highly interested.
  • Respondents who practice a religion in a thorough way were among the most likely to be interested in special education, as 11.51% in this group had this interest.
  • Respondents with strong left wing or strong right wing political sympathies were less likely than those of other political persuasions to be interested in careers in early childhood education.
  • Students living in fraternities/sororities and those whose families earn more than $150,000 per year were more likely than others to seek coursework and careers in higher education administration.
