Modern grocery retailers continued to expand in Guatemala in 2019. Over the review period, the most significant expansion was seen within convenience stores: Super 24 opened 32 new stores in 2018, and Unisuper SA entered with 10 La Torre Express stores. Discounters continued to expand aggressively: Wal-Mart Centroamérica SA opened 19 stores in 2018, most of them located in rural areas of the country.
