Philippines Power Market Outlook to 2030, Update 2019 - Market Trends, Regulations, and Competitive Landscape

Summary

The GDP of Philippines increased from $70.9 billion in 2000 to $166.4 billion in 2017, and is estimated at $177.3 billion in 2018. It is expected to increase $245.6 billion in 2023. The Philippines economy has performed better than those of most of its Southeast Asian neighbors, owing to its being less integrated with the world economy, low dependence upon exports, constantly high domestic consumption, generous remittances from overseas citizens, and a burgeoning industry for business process outsourcing. The population increased from 77 million in 2000 to 104.9 million in 2017 at a CAGR of 1.8%. By 2022, it is expected to have reached 118.2 million, registering a CAGR of 1.9%.

In the Philippines, population size is closely linked to power consumption, as the residential sector is one of the largest consumers of power. The strength of this sector is essential for the growth of the power sector. Annual electricity consumption increased from 36.6 Terawatt hours (TWh) in 2000 to 81.7 TWh in 2018 at a CAGR of 4.6%. It is expected to reach 110.6 TWh by 2023.

The power sector in the country is heavily skewed in favor of thermal power. In 2018, coal accounted for 36.4% of cumulative installed capacity. Oil made the next highest contribution, with 16.7%, followed by hydro and gas, with respective shares of 15.3% and 14.7%. Of the renewable sources, geothermal accounted for 7.8%, while solar PV, onshore wind and biopower together accounted for the remaining 9.2%.

The government is emphasizing the diversification of the power mix and accelerating the growth of hydropower and renewable power. The potential for growth in installed renewable power capacity is substantial. Geothermal is the dominant form of renewable power, and the shares of wind and solar power in the power mix are expected to rise, owing to favorable Feed-in Tariffs (FiT).
