The Netherlands Power Market Outlook to 2030, Update 2019 - Market Trends, Regulations, and Competitive Landscape

Summary

The Netherlands is a prominent member of the euro zone. The country’s GDP in current prices was worth $ 946.5 bn at the end of 2018 accounting for 1.07% of the world economy. GDP in Netherlands averaged around $ 865 bn during 2008 to 2018 with an all-time high of $ 946.5 bn in 2018 while the lowest was recorded at $ 759.0 bn in the year 2015.

Even though there have been fluctuations in economic growth trajectory from 2008 to 2018, the annual power consumption over the given time-period has remained steady with an average decline of only 0.37%. The steady power consumption is a reflection of vibrant economic activity with industries running at full steam and unemployment rate at 3.9% in 2018 compared to 5.2% in advanced economies resulting in increased income level of households and increase in purchasing power.

Gas accounted for 58% of total installed capacity in 2018 and is expected to have the maximum installed capacity in total generation mix till 2030, even though the share is expected to decline at 1.5% CAGR over the given period. Coal has a share of 13% in total installed capacity and is further expected to decline following the Dutch government’s decision of complete coal phase-out by 2030.

Wind and solar PV had a share of 12.5% and 11.0% respectively in 2018 and their installed capacity is further expected to grow at a CAGR of over 10% and 15% by 2030. Onshore wind capacity accounted for over 9% of installed capacity at 3.3 GW in 2018 and is expected to reach 6.8GW in 2025 and 9.6GW capacity by 2030 while offshore capacity at 1.1 GW (2018) is expected to grow at 15.4% CAGR to reach 7.2GW by 2030. Installed capacity of bio-power is projected to increase at a CAGR of 9% to reach 4.3GW by 2030 from 1.3GW in 2018, while hydro power capacity is to remain stagnant at around 36MW as no new projects are in the pipeline owing to lack of adequate hydro resources.
