Malaysia Power Market Outlook to 2030, Update 2019 - Market Trends, Regulations, and Competitive Landscape

Summary

Malaysia’s power consumption, driven both by an increase in economic activity and a growing population, grew from 56.7 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2000 to 152.1 TWh in 2018 at a CAGR of 5.6%, and is expected to have reached 181.7 TWh by 2023, having grown at a CAGR of 3.6% between 2018 and 2023.

Gas-fired thermal power was the single largest source of electricity in Malaysia in 2018, accounting for 43% of the total installed capacity. The country also uses coal and oil for thermal power generation, as well as hydropower and renewable sources, such as solar and biopower. Coal-based thermal power capacity accounted for 30.4% of total installed capacity, followed by hydropower with 17.2% and oil-based capacity with 5.9%. The remaining 3.6% came from other non-hydro renewable sources of energy such as biopower and solar photovoltaic (PV).
