The co-creator of the method used to create Humira (adalimumab), AbbVie Inc.’s blockbuster TNF inhibitor and the world’s most successful drug, was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

George Winter (along with Frances Arnold and George Smith) was awarded sciences highest honor for his groundbreaking research using phage display for the directed evolution of antibodies to ultimately counteract toxins, cure metastic cancer, and combat autoimmune diseases.

Since 2002, Humira has been successfully used to treat a range of diseases, with annual sales expected to reach $21b by 2020.
