In a recent JAMA Internal Medicine op-ed, Dr. Pieter Cohen of the Cambridge Health Alliance at Harvard Medical School called for more detailed labeling and a revision of good manufacturing practices (GMP) for probiotics, citing concerns about consumer safety.
Cohen noted that, despite the significant increase in usage of probiotics, no evidence exists that they are beneficial to already healthy people, and that labeling does not typically include information about possible adverse side effects. Additionally, Cohen cites shortfalls in GMP that he argues threaten public safety.
