Summary

Brazilian economy has experienced a steady growth between 2000 and 2018 with a 2.3% rise in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at constant rates over the projected time period. Growth briefly went south in 2015 and 2016 with a fall of 5.3% and 6.9% respectively compared to 2014 data as the country suffered from the worst recession till date. The industrial sector is the largest contributors to power consumption.

Annual power consumption increased at a CAGR of 2.7%, from 331.6 TWh in 2000 to 533.3 TWh in 2018, owing to population growth and the rise in GDP. Power generation increased at a CAGR of 3.0%, from 348.5 TWh to 597.5 TWh from 2000 to 2018. Hydropower alone accounted for 62.7% of installed capacity in 2018. Non-hydro renewable energy sources, including biopower, onshore wind, solar PV and solar thermal accounted for 19.3%, followed by thermal power (including coal, gas and oil) with 16.9%, and nuclear power with 1.2%.

Brazil's non-hydro renewable power sector is expected to grow tremendously - especially in the wind, biopower, and solar energy segments - as a result of government initiatives and increased private sector participation. Wind energy development has gained prominence in the Brazilian power market since the introduction of wind power auctions in 2009. Onshore wind capacity is expected to increase at a CAGR of around 6.0%, between 2019 and 2030, although no contribution from offshore wind is expected.
