The Vietnam Beverage Market has gradually met the needs of consumers; replaced a part of imported goods and participated in export, in which Beer and Soft-drink still dominated, Alcohol only accounted for a small proportion in the whole industry. The production and consumption volume of beverages in 2018 decreased slightly by 0.97% compared to the same period last year while the industry's revenue increased by 4.07% over the same period.
Regarding the Beer market, the domestic beer industry has met domestic demand, reduced import and increased exports. In particular, in 2018 the total production of beer increased by 14% over the same period, the revenue of beer consumption increased by more than 7%. Equatorial Guinea was the largest beer market of Vietnam with about 20% of total beer exports in 2018. Meanwhile, Vietnam's imported beer were almost from the Netherlands and Mexico with the market shares of 25% and 17 % respectively.
Regarding the alcohol market, in general, the scale of wine market was small and tended to decrease, failed to meet the demand for high-grade alcohol consumption in the country and had low export value. In 2018, the wine industry increased by 8.94%; Consumption revenue increased by 8.98%. Wine imports increased compared to the same period in 2017 in both production (9.7%) and value (9.5%), as the domestic consumption market remained stable.
Regarding the soft-drink market, soft-drink production in Vietnam decreased 7.29% and consumption decreased by 7.17%. In particular, soft-drink exports declined due to difficulty in production. Soft-drink exports increased slightly by 4.5% over the same period of exports; soft-drink imports surged to 9.3% in volume.
Among the typical enterprises in the Beverage industry, only a few domestic enterprises with large scale and strong brand names such as Habeco, Sabeco and Tan Hiep Phat were able to compete with FDI enterprises. The rest businesses were small, independent , weak to competitive and lack of capital to expand their business.
According to BMI, consumption of alcoholic beverages will increase by an annual average of 11.8% by 2022, surpassing the forecasted consumption growth of 6.1% in the same period. This period was said to have a positive outlook thanks to stable economic factors, as well as a professionally developed retail network throughout Vietnam. Beverage production was forecasted to reach the CAGR of 5.62%
