Vietnam's coal industry is fragmented and under complicated geological conditions. In spite of technology advancement, the conditions for applying and deploying technology are limited by scale. In 2018 the coal production increased by 10% compared to the same period in 2017. In particular, TKV output increased by 15% compared to the previous year and accounted for 88% of the whole industry.

In 2018, exported coal increased by 7.5% in volume and 1% in value over the same period of 2017. The cause of the sharp increase in coal export was that the international coal price fluctuated, which pushed up coal price. Therefore, domestic coal price gradually gained market share, many partners returned to import goods from TKV. Meanwhile, imported coal also increased strongly by 55.7% in volume and 66.5% in value.

Recent years, business results of coal enterprises have not seen many mutations and even had a tendency to decline. However, by 2017, the situation was more positive, mainly due to the impact of the increase in the global coal price. However, the coal industry is still in a monopoly mechanism, so it is difficult for subsidiaries to be proactive in their business plans and still has to depend entirely on TKV.
