The global market for Electrosurgery is projected to reach US$5.3 billion by 2025 driven by the growing burden of surgical conditions and the ensuing need to reduce the associated economic and financial costs. Surgery represents an essential component of the healthcare system and improper surgical care, surgical errors, lack of appropriate surgical devices/instruments tend to significantly push up costs associated with post-surgical complications. Benefits of electrosurgery include precise and smaller incisions, limited tissue damage and blood loss, ability to cut, coagulate, desiccate and fulgurate tissue, ease and flexibility in reaching hard to access location in the human body as compared to traditional scalpel surgery. Electrosurgical devices are more effective than scalpel in abdominal operations where multiple layers of tissue need to be cut before the surgical site can be reached. Few of the myths which have until now impeded the use of electrosurgery is now dissipating such as erroneous beliefs that electrosurgery techniques increase scar formation, impair and delay healing. A growing number of surgeons today receive formal training on electrosurgery as the academic community wakes up to the benefits of the technology and its potential uses.

Among the electrosurgical technologies in use, bipolar electrosurgery is generally considered safer with lower risk of patient burns as the technology utilizes low energy voltage. Monopolar electrosurgery, on the other hand, is more versatile and effective in cutting, blending, desiccation, and fulguration of tissues. Also gaining in prominence is the use of plasma as an entirely different energy source for electrosurgeries. Argon Plasma Coagulator (APC), also known as, The Argon Beam Coagulator (ABC) utilizes cold plasma technology and is superior when compared to conventional RF radio frequency based electrosurgery. Clinical benefits of utilizing plasma surgical technique include reduced destruction and necrosis of tissues, effective control of blood loss which is vital in all types of surgeries, and reduced need for blood transfusion etc. The APC technology utilizes 99.99% pure ionized argon gas to generate electrically neutral plasma jet. A non-contact technology, APC conducts current to the tissue and there is no external electrical current flow to the tissue. Also, tissues are never exposed to temperatures beyond 110°, as argon gas has a cooling effect. The United States and Europe represent large markets worldwide with a combined share of 65.7% of the market. China ranks as the fastest growing market with a CAGR of 4.5% over the analysis period supported by the remarkable progress made by the country in developing its primary health-care system. Access to and affordability of healthcare services have improved significantly over the last decade. Improving access to surgical care is helping drive the use of electrosurgery technologies.
