In the early 2000s, there were shifts in the perceptions of safety of parabens due to studies showing that esters cause estrogenic effects. Since estrogenic chemicals are shown to play a key role in breast cancer, deeper research was taken up to find whether parabens are rapidly metabolized and excreted always, or they might linger in the body in some cases and be potentially harmful. By 2004, there were mounting concerns about the safety of esters when researchers showed the accumulation of intact parabens in human breast tumors. This is driving cosmetics manufacturers to look for alternative techniques of preservation. The past decade demonstrated the difficulty of finding preservatives with a broad and spectrum of antimicrobial effects with the robustness required to ensure safety while being sufficiently mild to avoid any negative interaction with other ingredients. Hurdle Technology, as the very name suggests, creates a series of hurdles, which might not be individually big enough to avert contamination, collectively, as back-to-back hurdles, they keep the microorganisms in control.
