Adoption of LPWA Technologies in Public Safety Applications Grows


As cellular LPWA offers several advantages over non-cellular LPWA, public safety organizations are increasingly opting for cellular LPWA technologies such as LTE machine-type communications (LTE-M) and narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) for monitoring, tracking and other IoT applications. The challenges of non-cellular LPWA such as low data rates policy limiting the use of available bandwidth, and greater interference among devices is expected to pave the way for cellular LPWA technologies in public safety applications. Cellular LPWA connectivity solutions can provide public safety applications at better coverage conditions, lower cost, and lower power consumption than conventional cellular technologies. Nearly 156 such networks have been rolled out, supported by 70 operators in 40 countries. LTE-M is a branch of LTE technology that was built for Machine-to-Machine communication. Unlike other LPWANs, LTE-M/Cat-M1/Cat-M2 networks can use existing 4G LTE infrastructure. Using LTE-M, IoT devices can transmit and receive large amounts of data without draining the battery. The rapid evolution of wearable technology is promising for public safety end-users. The need for information on the move is increasingly being served by wearable technology. Body sensors on firefighters detecting distress, police officers receiving information on smartwatches, and paramedics seeing vital information on smart glasses are just some of the possibilities offered by wearable technology.

Devices using LTE-M and NB-IoT tend to have longer battery life by transmitting small amounts of data and then entering extended sleep cycles. In addition, these devices can transmit data repeatedly until the message is received, which effectively result in extended coverage. LTE-M offers better reliability, low latency and higher data rates at around 4Mbps in comparison with non-cellular LPWA networks. The higher data rate and reliable data transfer while on the move is highly suitable for mission-critical applications requiring real-time input. With higher data throughput than other LPWANs and older networks, devices connected via LTE-M can download major updates, including new capabilities and security updates without draining the battery. While non-cellular LPWA such as LoRa and SigFox operate on unlicensed spectrum, LTE-M and NB-IoT are designed for use on licensed broadband spectrum. The use of unlicensed bands can lead to greater interference among devices which can reduce efficiency. A notable development in the market, Telit, a global provider of IoT solutions, offers LTE modules that are certified to support LTE-M for use on FirstNet, providing reliable connectivity for first responders and public safety devices.
