This report includes statistical data and analysis of the Japanese man-made fibre and technical textiles industry under the following headings: man-made fibre production and consumption in Japan; man-made fibre consumption for technical textile applications in Japan; and production of technical textiles in Japan. It also includes an outlook for the Japanese technical textile industry and contains a wealth of recently released data for 2018.

Overall, man-made fibre production in Japan declined in 2018 to its second-lowest level on record and, in particular, there were declines in the production of filament yarn production and of staple fibre production. Furthermore, the consumption of domestically produced fibres for industrial textile production in 2017/18 was down by 5.4% to its lowest level in at least 20 years. There were some bright spots, however, as there were increases in the production of acrylic staple fibre, polypropylene staple fibre and "other synthetic" staple fibres. Also, mill consumption of fibre for tyre reinforcement rose to its highest level since 2014, and nonwoven fabric production reached a record high.
