Key Highlights
- The burgeoning landscape of fintech firms and digital-only banks is poised to intensify competition within the Mexican banking sector and increase the banking population in the country. In October 2025, the UK-based fintech Revolut obtained final regulatory approval to begin operating as a fully licensed digital bank in Mexico from the CNBV. Furthermore, in January 2026, Revolut officially commenced its operations in Mexico, enabling users to open a bank account online, along with a Virtual payment card. On a similar note, in February 2026, the CNBV also issued a full banking license to domestic fintech Plata. With this license, Plata transitions to Banco Plata from its prior status as a credit-focused fintech to a banking institution. It offers bank accounts targeted at both retail and business (especially small- and medium-sized enterprises [SMEs]), along with a debit card. In addition, it offers credit cards, along with two, interest-free installments.
- Payment infrastructure is growing rapidly in Mexico. To capitalize on this, companies are offering mobile POS solutions designed to target SMEs. For instance, in March 2026, Mercado Pago introduced the Point Tap solution in Mexico, which enables merchants to accept contactless payments via cards and digital wallets directly on their Android smartphones via NFC. Similarly, in January 2026, the digital commerce platform Clip launched the Tap to Pay function for Android devices which allows businesses to convert their smartphones into payment terminals to accept contactless payments.
- Mexico represents a significant market in the remittance industry. In recognition, in July 2025, the American online remittance service provider Remitly launched a QR-code-based cash pickup service at Elektra and Banco Azteca locations in Mexico. The sender uses Remitly’s app or website to transfer money to a recipient in Mexico, selecting cash pickup as the delivery method. Once the transaction is confirmed, Remitly generates a unique, secure QR code linked to the specific transfer. The recipient receives the QR code via the Remitly app, SMS or email, along with instructions on where to collect the funds. Once the recipient visits a designated partner location, presents valid identification, and has the QR code scanned by a cashier, the system verifies the transfer in real time and the cashier immediately disburses the funds in cash.
