Nephrology stents and catheters are one of the key products and treatment options in nephology for drainage of obstructed urine in patients. Blockage in one or both the ureters leads to the usage of these nephrostomy stents and catheters. In recent decades, the prevalence of nephrologocal disorders like kidney stones has found to increase.

The incidence of kidney stones increases with age, and the increasing geriatric population is increasing the incidence rate even more. These have been the primary driving factors for the growth of the overall market. The rising technological advancements in the materials used for catheters and stents have also increased the adoption rate of these instruments among the doctors and practitioners as well. However, the discomfort caused due to stents and catheters and the risk of infection due to unclean stents and catheters have also been restraining the market growth.

Key Market Trends

Nephrology Catheters are Expected to Dominate the Market

Nephrology catheters are inserted into the bladder where it is held in place by a balloon filled with sterile water. Urine drains through the catheter into a bag that can be emptied. It may be used in cases of urine retention, interrupted urine stream, straining on urination, obstructed urethra or for the monitoring of urine output in a critically ill patient or after surgery.

A percutaneous nephrostomy is the placement of a small, flexible rubber tube catheter through the skin into the kidney to drain the urine. This is done especially in Kidney Stones. Moreover, as the kidney stones prevalence incidence with age, as per Justin B. Ziemba et al, published in Investigative and Clinical Urology, 2017. The study has reported that the prevalence in 20 to 29-year-old adults is 3.1% for both men and women, which then increases and peaks in 60 to 69-year-old adults at 19.1% in men and 9.4% in women.

A United Nations report, World Population Ageing, published in 2019 states that the global population is aging, especially in developed countries. Hence, as the geriatric population increase, the incidence of kidney stones is also expected to increase and this increases the overall demand for nephrology catheters, which will help the market to grow.

North America Region is Expected to Dominate the Nephrology Stents and Catheters Market

The North American countries of the United States (US) and Canada have one of the largest pool of geriatric population in the world and is expected to increase in the future. According to a United Nations report, on World Population Ageing, published in 2017, the percentage popualtion 60 years and above in the US and Canada is expected to increase from 21.5% and 23.5% to 27.8% and 32% respectively.

However, the United States and Canada have a developed and well-structured health care system. These systems thus encourages research and development. These policies encourage global players to enter the US and Canada region. Therefore as a result, these countries enjoy the presence of many global market players. As high and increasing demand is met by the presence of global players in the US, the market is further expected to increase.

Competitive Landscape

The majority of the nephrology stents and catheters are being manufactured by the global key players. Market leaders with more funds for research and better distribution system have established their position in the market. Moreover, Asia-pacific is witnessing an emergence of some small players due to the rise of awareness. This has also helped the market grow.
