  • Slovakia does not have an instant payment system. However, in January 2022, the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) launched SEPA Instant Credit transfers in the country via three major banks: Slovenská sporitelna, VUB banka, and Tatra banka (which is part of Raiffeisen Bank). The scheme is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and allows individuals and businesses to make payments in less than 10 seconds.
  • Slovakia's ecommerce transaction value recorded healthy growth of 14.1% in 2021e. To benefit from the growing ecommerce market, international players are launching online platforms in the country. In June 2021, Germany-based online fashion retailer Zalando launched its ecommerce platform in Slovakia to boost its ecommerce business. The rise in ecommerce will drive electronic payments, as bank transfers and payment cards are the preferred method of payment for ecommerce purchases.
  • Digital-only banks are helping to boost financial inclusion in the country. 365.bank is a mobile-only bank based in Slovakia that launched in November 2018. The bank offers a free account with a virtual Mastercard debit card. Since its inception, 365.bank had attracted over 50,000 customers as of December 2020, recording year-on-year growth of 84% compared to 2019. Meanwhile, in March 2021, UK-based digital-only bank Revolut launched in the country; it offers Standard, Plus, Premium, and Metal accounts along with Mastercard debit cards. Similarly, N26 offers a variety of accounts along with Mastercard debit cards.
