This report provides insights into Aetna's insurtech activities, including its digital transformation strategies, its technology initiatives, and its estimated ICT budget.

Aetna (a subsidiary of CVS Health) is a healthcare benefits company. Aetna offers a range of traditional, voluntary, and consumer-directed health insurance products and related services. The company provides insurance products for medical, dental, pharmacy, behavioral health, long-term care, medical stop loss, group life, and disability. It also offers Medicaid healthcare management services, Medicare Advantage and Medicare supplement plans, and workers' compensation services. In November 2018, CVS Health acquired Aetna to combine the latter’s healthcare benefits products and services with its own integrated pharmacy capabilities with the aim of delivering connected care and outcomes. The acquisition saw CVS add a new Health Care Benefits segment to its business, equivalent to the former Aetna Health Care segment. Operations and products for which Aetna no longer solicits or acquires new customers (such as large case pensions and long-term case insurance products) have been added to CVS’s Corporate/Other segment. Health Care Benefits primarily serves employer groups, individuals, college students, part-time and hourly workers, labor groups, and expats.

Scope

  • Aetna’s Analytics and Behavior Change team focuses on implementing data modeling, analytics, machine learning, and other reporting capabilities to resolve business issues. It works with Aetna’s different business divisions to use machine learning and other tools for data scrutiny.
  • Aetna Innovation Labs partnered with GNS Healthcare (a provider of big data analytics) to conduct a study to identify patients with high metabolic syndrome risk. As part of the study, two models were created to analyze data collected from around 37,000 Aetna customers who underwent metabolic screening over a two-year period.
  • To safeguard its on-premises systems, Aetna has made significant investments in security infrastructure. It has deployed Skyhigh’s cloud access security broker solution in combination with Box, a cloud content management and file-sharing service. This helps prevent data loss and supports applications across mobile, desktop, and browsers hosted via Box.
