Spintronics have been in the lexicon of post-CMOS alternatives over a long period. Spintronics uses the quantum property of spin in electrons, as opposed to conventional transistors that work by stopping and starting the movement of electrons to create binary logic. The electron spin property serves as the basis for magnetism: if the electrons rotate moves in one direction, then a substance becomes magnetized.

Most designs relied on electrons to accumulate at the interface between a metallic magnet and an insulator to exploit the phenomenon in digital logic transistors. Unfortunately there's very little impact when a voltage is applied to change the spin in such a system.

The invention of giant magnetoresistance (GMR)-based devices has triggered a paradigm change in the electronics industry, taking new technology areas, such as magneto-electronics, out. GMR is an effect of quantum mechanical magnetoresistance produced when multilayers are composed of alternating layers of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic conductivity. In general, the GMR systems consist of a non-magnetic metal layer between two magnetic metals.

GMR sensors are also used for various applications in the automotive industry, such as rotational speed, angle, and location. New hybrid electric cars, including the Toyota Prius, use integrated power electronics (IPEM) modules to minimize prices, kit size, and interconnections. A GMR point field detector is used directly within the IPEM module for the in-situ current measurement. Therefore, as electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles are gradually being introduced, the use of GMR systems is also expected to grow over the projected period.
