Automotive vehicle engine is the main cause of automotive mechanical vibrations. The engine is vulnerable to the unpredictable action in varying speed ranges caused by the intensity of engine disturbance. Automotive engine noises may cause structural failure, certain components malfunction or passengers distress due to high-level noise and vibrations. The engine mounts serve as the vibration paths that are transferred from the sources of excitation to the vehicle and passenger body. Proper design and control of these mounts are thus important for modulating the vibration of platform structures.

Vibration control methods can be used to improve vibration resistant capacities of engine mounting systems. For example, certain passive and semi-active dissipation devices can be installed on mounts to increase the absorption potential of the vibration energy. Periodic mounts exhibit special dynamic characteristics that make them serve as mechanical filters for wave propagation.

Typically, a machine is made up of nearly two moving parts but in many situations it may consist of as much as hundreds of pieces of different sizes. Each of these parts has a role to play within the machine, working in a manner that will help the whole machine work. When the machine works, the components may become old, dust may accumulate on their surfaces, and fastenings may become looser.
