Spain is the largest producer of orange fruit in the region, followed by Italy and Greece. In Europe, orange production is concentrated in the Mediterranean region. Spain and Italy account for 80% of Europe’s orange production, with the remaining 20% being distributed among the other European Union countries like Portugal, Greece, and Cyprus. Production Analysis of Orange

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the production volume of oranges in the European Union increased to 6451.5 thousand tons in 2018 up from 6056.5 thousand tons in 2017 which is a 6.52% rise in the production volume. The harvest time or maturity period of oranges in the European Union concentrates in the short period from September to June. The most cultivated varieties of oranges in the region are Moro, Naveline, Tarocco, Valencia, Ippolito, Meli, and Sanguinello. Orange is one of the key raw ingredients for many food processing and other industrial applications. Many beverage processing industries like the juice industry, cosmetic industry, and textile industry consider orange as one of the important ingredients in manufacturing products, which in turn is thriving the demand and consumption of oranges. Oranges are gaining popularity among the consumers in the region, owing to their natural sweetness, wide varieties, and diversity of uses, from juices and marmalades to face masks and candied orange slices. The nutritional benefits of these uses have driven the demand for oranges among the consumers.

Spain Dominates the Market in Terms of Production and Export

Spain is the leading orange producing country in the region with a 54% share in the total production in the European Union in 2018, followed by Italy with 25% and Greece with a 16% share, owing to favorable weather conditions including rainy spring and mild summer. According to United States Department of Agriculture, the major orange producing regions in Spain are Valencia and Andalusia, witnessing for a majority of the Spanish orange production, while Sicily and Calabria are the principal orange-producing areas in Italy, registering for 63% and 19% in the orange production in Italy and Peloponnese and Etoloakarnania are the main orange growing regions in Greece. The producers are focused on growing both early and late varieties of orange, in order to expand the fruit availability and supply throughout the whole marketing year. According to the International Trade Centre, Canada, China, and Saudi Arabia are the major importers of oranges from the European Union. Canada accounted for the largest share in the export market, with 1.2% of the export market share in 2018. The European Union countries are exporting the oranges in huge quantities among themselves only. For instance, Spain exports oranges to Germany, France, the Netherlands, and other European Union countries, while the Netherlands also exports oranges to Germany, France, Belgium and other countries.
