The Europe Lipid Market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.13% during the forecast period (2020 - 2025).
  • The growing awareness regarding the nutritional and functional importance of lipids is primarily driving the market. The rising demand for lipids resulted in increased production of synthetic lipids for pharmaceutical applications, particularly in Western Europe.
  • The lipid market is primarily driven by increasing health consciousness, thus, increasing the demand for healthy and safe food products. Consumers have started focusing more on healthy foods, preferring quality over quantity, and opting to buy less but more premium and natural foods.

Key Market Trends

Growing Demand for Omega 3 and Omega 6 Products

Omega-3 fatty acids are prominently segmented in two major categories, Eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexanoic acid (DHA). DHA has a major share in the omega-3 fatty acids market, followed by EPA. The majority of the products available in the market are fortified with either DHA or EPA, which are the two most essential fatty acids. Moreover, EPA and DHA have numerous scientifically proven health benefits, which make them the preferred omega fatty acids. Linoleic acid accounts for 85-90% of dietary omega-6 fatty acids. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes could be significantly reduced by eating a diet, rich in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats. Most dietary supplements have a medium concentration of omega-3 capsules. The medium concentration of omega-3 capsules is the most selling consumer product.

Increased Utilization in Nutrition and Supplements

The term “lipid-based nutrient supplements” (LNS) refers generically to a range of fortified, lipid-based products, including products like Ready-to-Use-Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) (a large daily ration with relatively low micronutrient concentration) as well as highly-concentrated supplements (1-4 teaspoons/day, providing < 100 kcal/day) to be used for “point-of-use” fortification and RUTF have been successfully used for the management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) among children in emergency settings. LNS has been used to treat moderate acute malnutrition; however, there is no consensus on it being more effective than CSB (Corn soy blend). LNS is given in smaller doses, more so because they are more concentrated. These supplements are designed to provide 50 to 100% of the day’s energy requirements.

Competitive Landscape

Europe lipid market is highly competitive, as different players across the world are coming up with nutritional ingredients in order to expand their reach in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries and the most active companies are Koninklijke DSM N.V., Cargill Inc, BASF SE, Kerry Group and Archer Daniels Midland. Mergers and acquisitions, followed by new product launches are the most preferred strategies in the lipid market. The major manufacturers are delivering consistent top and bottom-line growth. The companies are increasing the proportion of protecting innovations as a strategy to attract the major share of the consumers and meet their growing specific demands.
