The European market for mobile health (mhealth) is majorly driven by factors such as the rising use of smartphones across the region, increased focus on personalized medicine and patient-centered approach, etc.

The prevalence of chronic diseases has been growing in Europe over the past decades in line with an aging population, often affecting a higher number of people of the serviceable age. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over one-third of the European population above the age of 15 have a chronic disease and two out of three people reaching retirement age will have at least two chronic conditions. Thus, the prevalence of chronic diseases is increasing awareness, which has, in turn, initiated a demand for continuously monitoring health, leading to the adoption of healthcare management devices.

These devices keep a track of health-related information about patients, which minimizes emergency situations, hospitalizations, imaging tests, and procedures. This, along with the ubiquity of smartphones, is compelling an increasing number of people to use their mobile devices to monitor, track, and manage their health more than ever before. Indeed, these mobile phones have now become a choice for the people as people are nowadays tracking their daily activities, whether at work, in business, or while going about personal tasks.

Consumers are tracking their overall health and fitness with these apps and becoming engaged and active participants in the monitoring and management of their health. Therefore, patients are increasingly becoming aware of healthcare management benefits, and are looking for better-managed healthcare facilities for quick access, but at a lesser price. This has led to a growing demand for the mobile health market. Hence, increased awareness levels among the population about the potential benefits of healthcare management are expected to drive the market studied over the forecast period.

Key Market Trends

Blood Glucose Monitors are Expected to Have the Largest Share in Device Type Segment

Prevalence of diabetes is increasing among all the age groups in the European region, mostly due to an increase in the overweight and obese population, an unhealthy diet, and a lack of physical activity. These are also the major drivers propelling the growth of glucose monitors in the mobile health market over the forecast period.

As per the statistics provided by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the prevalence of Diabetes in Europe for the year 2017 was 9.1% and the number of people suffering from this disease was around 66 million. It has been estimated by the IDF that by the year 2045, the prevalence of Diabetes will reach up to 10.8% and the number of people having this disease would reach 81 million.

Diabetes is found to be one of the leading cause of death in the European region. The condition continues to increase in prevalence, as diabetic macro- and microvascular complications result in increased disability and enormous healthcare costs. Additionally, there is a need for continuous monitoring of glucose levels in diabetic patients. Therefore companies are now using the leading-edge technology to make these devices compatible with various mobile platforms to remove the extra bulk devices. In 2017, sugarBEAT, from Nemaura Medical in the United Kingdom was launched to help monitor the blood sugar. Technological advancements in glucose monitoring devices, such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, are fulfilling the need of the customers. Some of the scientists are also developing a skin-based glucose monitor, in order to detect the glucose levels in sweat, as an indicator of the overall blood glucose concentration.

Thus, the rise in the number of patients suffering from diabetes and technological advancements in the glucose/insulin monitoring wearable devices are expected to boost the growth of the European mHealth market.

Competitive Landscape

The market for mHealth in Europe is moderately competitive and consists of the global players mostly. WIth the rising technological advancements in mobile health services and products, more comapnies are expected to penetrate the market. Small to mid-sized companies are belived to grab substantial share in European market in the coming future.
