The rotary vane vacuum pump market is expected to register a CAGR of 4% during the forecast period (2020 - 2025). Vacuum pumps have had a substantial demand from various end-user verticals, as the operations involved in these verticals are incredibly susceptible to corrosion, due to constant exposure to several harsh environments. This is emphasizing the need for vacuum pumps to comply with various industry regulations. A rotary vane vacuum pump is an oil-sealed rotary displacement pump with a system comprising of housing, an eccentrically installed rotor, vanes that move radially under spring force, and the inlet and outlet. The outlet valve is generally oil-sealed.
  • In April 2020, an independent testing organization, TÜV Süd, carried out a comparison of the vacuum pumps, by simulating a standard industrial process. Under such constraints, the result indicated that the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump has superior performance. The R 5 RA 0630 C oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump (RVVP) from Busch was tested, and it performed better (in terms of pump-down time and energy consumption) than the screw vacuum pump (SVP) which was initially designed as a compressor. The test results are indicative of the superiority of the vane vacuum pump in such an industrial performance class.
  • Whereas, oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pumps are being deployed across many fields for decades. Currently, they represent the most widely used mechanical vacuum pumps. However, oil-free vacuum pumps have been introduced in the market, acting as a restraint towards the adoption of rotary vane vacuums. For instance, in July 2019, Dekker Vacuum launched VmaxPlus, a ten horsepower (hp) oil-sealed liquid ring vacuum pump for woodworking & CNC routing. The VmaxPlus offers superior hold-down force, lower maintenance costs, and noise reduction compared to traditional rotary vane vacuum pump whose performance is limited to a mere 115 CFM.
  • The industry 4.0 trend additionally has led manufacturers across the end-user verticals to opt for newer and connected vane vacuum pumps. For instance, Fleischwarenfabrik Dieter Hein in early 2019, aimed towards energy-efficient production and preserving resources. The company had already centralized its vacuum supply for its packaging machine and wanted to save more energy with the pump with built-in pressure control and a PLC. Therefore, the company resorted to Busch's new R 5 RA 0760 A PLUS, a rotary vane vacuum pump. It featured a frequency-controlled motor and an integrated control unit as standard.
  • Amidst the coronavirus outbreak, the manufacturers around the world had to halt production in early 2020, whereas, as of May 2020, most of the production facilities are operating at under-efficiency. Multiple vendors have been witnessed to have offered vacuum system solutions to various healthcare facilities. For instance, as of April 2020, Busch provides Vacuum System, thereby assisting Spain in coping with the second-highest number of confirmed COVID-19 infected people. The vacuum system consists of three R5 rotary vane vacuum pumps, mounted on a vacuum vessel, and upstream bacteria filters.
Key Market Trends

Semiconductor Industry is Expected to Hold Significant Share

With the semiconductor industry being a key driver of the significant region’s economic strength, global competitiveness, and technology leadership, especially in microprocessors, the demand for vane vacuum pumps has been substantial. The rapid development of semiconductor technology led the semiconductor devices as well to develop from generation to generation. Currently, the manufacture and use of semiconductor equipment involves many high and new techniques, such as various chemical elements, and has a robust technical comprehensiveness.
  • Semiconductor equipment technology has gradually integrated technology modularization into equipment, making it highly automated and intelligent. This has affected the natural separation of material and the process to change. New vacuum applications in the semiconductor manufacturing process have emerged, mainly fueled by the production of smartphones, high-brightness LED lighting, photovoltaic solar panels, and Li-ion batteries.
  • Semiconductor process vacuum is used across evaporation, sputtering, PECVD, vacuum dry etching, vacuum adsorption, testing equipment, vacuum cleaning, and other bonding processes. The flammable, explosive, and toxic substance gases in the manufacturing process of semiconductor, leads to the manufacturer of vacuum pumps to adhere to compliances such as CE and UL/CSA standards for production and personnel safety.
  • Dry etching, for instance, is generally used to remove the etched thin film through the combination of physical and chemical methods, so the etching has anisotropy, which can fundamentally improve the inherent problem of horizontal drilling erosion of wet process, to meet the requirements of fine line etching, rotary vane vacuum technology is one of them. Also, Vacuum pumps alone represent up to 25% of the total energy consumed by a semiconductor manufacturing facility.
North America is Expected to Hold Significant Share

Traditionally, the rotary vane vacuum pump market has been dominated by vendors based out of Europe, such as Atlas Copco, which have acquired various pump businesses to increase their foothold. However, these companies reported revenues closer to their domestic revenues. While several vendors have established their manufacturing facilities in North America, in the United States, the other international vendors have increased their distributor networks in North America. The rotary vane vacuum pump is expected to grow significantly in the United States owing to the several developments taking place in various end-user industries, such as semiconductors, solar, and process industries.
  • In May 2020, Intel and a Taiwanese company held talks with the United States government about the building of new semiconductor plants in the United States due to the concern about relying on suppliers in the Asia Pacific for chips used in a wide variety of electronics. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is planning to build a plant outside of Taiwan and has talked with the the the Commerce Department and are actively evaluating all the suitable locations, including in the United States. With the rotary vane vacuum pump is significantly used in the semiconductor, the developments are expected to impact the market in the region positively.
  • The expansion of solar-powered electricity in the United States accounted for approximately 40% of all new generating capacity. And total installed photovoltaic (PV) power is expected to more than double in the next five years, concerning a report released in March 2020 by the Solar Energy Industries Association. The US growth, a 23% jump in the year 2019 over 2018, was led by California, where concern over forest fires and solar requirements for newly built homes pushed up PV demand. It was followed by dramatic solar growth in the Northeast and sunny Texas and Florida. Solar is one of the end-user verticals that effectively utilizes rotary vane vacuum pump technology.
Competitive Landscape

The rotary vane vacuum pump market is quite consolidated, with the majority of the market occupied by few players in the market. Technological advancements in their product line are bringing sustainable competitive advantage to the companies, and the market is also witnessing upgradation of the existing product portfolio. The market is also witnessing various mergers and acquisitions.

March 2020 - Pneumofore SpA participated in the technical conference and exhibition for can makers and suppliers operating in the Latin American metal packaging sector, where the company presented the low Life Cycle Cost approach of Pneumofore Rotary Vane solutions and high energy savings that could be achieved with the correct usage of pressure setting in the supply of compressed air and vacuum.
  • February 2020 - Atlas Copco acquired Dekker Vacuum Technologies Inc. The company engages in the development of vacuum equipment and service solutions for industrial applications. This acquisition will complement Atlas Copco's existing portfolio in the liquid ring pump market and will enable the company to serve more vacuum applications at the customers. The acquired business will operationally become part of the Industrial Vacuum Division within the company's Vacuum Technique Business Area.
