Canada's waste-to-energy market is expected to register a CAGR of more than 3.34% during the forecast period, 2022-2027. The country witnessed no recordable negative impact due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. However, there seems to have been delays in the execution of projects due to supply chain issues. The advancements and penetration of WTE technologies in North America have still not resonated with the pace at which the waste gets generated in the region. The region’s decreasing availability of landfill space is creating a shift toward the development of renewable energy, which provides the market with immense potential for growth in the near future. Canada has been one of the countries worldwide at the forefront of adopting WTE technologies mainly because of the introduction of many favorable government initiatives. The country still lacks suitable policies and regulations concerning WTE, high capital investment, an increasing rate of recycling waste, and several other factors that have been restraining the growth of the WTE market.

Key Highlights

  • Thermal-based waste-to-energy technology is expected to dominate the market due to the number of incineration plants in the country.
  • Technological advancements in the waste-to-energy sector are expected to create a significant amount of opportunities for plant operators in the near future.
  • Municipalities in the state have moved toward both public and private companies to meet constraints related to budgets and increase efficiency in managing the WTE technologies.

Key Market Trends

Thermal-based Waste to Energy Conversion May Have Increasing Adoption

  • As of 2020, thermal technology is expected to account for the highest market share in the global and Canadian waste-to-energy markets. This trend of dominance by the thermal division is expected to continue in the coming years due to the increasing developments in the technologies of incineration and gasification.
  • Incineration and other forms of thermal technology account for around 51% of waste processing in Canada.
  • It is estimated that plants that utilize cogeneration of thermal power (heating and cooling) together with electricity generation can reach optimum efficiencies of 80%.
  • In the present scenario, incineration is the most well-known waste-to-energy technology for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) processing.
  • However, waste-to-energy technologies, particularly incineration, produce pollution and carry potential health safety risks.
  • To reduce particulate and gas-phase emissions, incineration plant owners have adopted a series of process units to clean the flue gas stream, which has, in turn, led to a significant improvement in terms of environmental sustainability.
  • In October 2020, Enbridge, Walker Industries, and Comcor Environmental started work on the Renewable Natural Gas from Waste project in Niagara Falls. The project is expected to cost around USD 42 million and is expected to come online in 2022.
  • Thus, the wide availability of technology, combined with a change in technology, is expected to lead to the increasing adoption of thermal-based WTE technology during the forecast period.

The Recycling Rate of Waste in Canada Remains a Restrain

  • The average generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Canada is around 107.2 million ton. Of the MSW generated, approximately 47 million ton were recycled, and 16 million ton were composted.
  • Together, more than 63 million ton of MSW were recycled and composted, equivalent to a 35.8% recycling and composting rate.
  • The new government policies have a lot of restrictions on high carbon emissions, which restrains the growth of the incineration process. Carbon emissions have been increasing in the country in recent years.
  • Also, the plan to increase in recycling of municipal solid waste to 60% by 2035 is expected to affect the market for incineration as well.
  • Overall, the increasing technological advancements in the recycling sector, combined with favorable government policies, are expected to slow down the growth of Canada's waste-to-energy market during the forecast period.

Competitive Landscape

Canada's waste-to-energy market is moderately fragmented. Some of the key players are Martin GmbH, Suez SA, Covanta Holding Corp., Waste Management Inc., and Wheelabrator Technologies Inc., among others.
