Salmon is the common name for several species of ray-finned fish in the family Salmonidae. With high nutrition, salmon has become more and more common in Chinese people’s life. 75% of salmon in China is used in restaurants and hotels.

According to the analyst, in terms of the global consumption of salmon, China has a large share. From 2015 to 2018, China’s salmon consumption growth rate was the second in the world. Specifically, the growth of the frozen market is relatively stable, while the growth of the fresh market is very fast.

According to the analyst, domestic salmon consumption demand is not small, but domestic salmon is relatively difficult to seize the market, because the cost of breeding salmon in China is high, and the quality is not better than imported salmon. Thus, more than 60% of salmon consumption in China relies on imports.

According to the analyst, in 2019, China imported 89,721 tons of salmon, worth USD 782.67 million, with the average price USD 8,723 per ton. Norwegian salmon and Chilean salmon are the two major products in China’s salmon market.

China’s per capita consumption of salmon is currently only 60 grams per year, while Europe’s consumption is about 2 kg, which means that the consumption market of salmon in China is far from saturation, and it still has great development potential. Despite the global supply chain disruption caused by the COVID-19, salmon was relatively less affected because fish cannot be infected with the coronavirus.

However, the report about the new outbreak in Beijing still caused panic among some Chinese consumers and reduced some purchases of salmon. According to the analyst, it is expected that salmon imports in 2020 will be negatively affected, and the original growth rate will be restored after 2021. By 2024, it is estimated that China’s salmon import volume will reach 208.80 kilo tons, about USD 1,841 million.

Moreover, the main categories of salmon imported in China would be fresh or chilled salmon, followed by frozen salmon, and a small number of prepared salmon and smoked salmon. According to the analyst, the main sources of imports will be Chile, Norway, Faroe, and other countries, among of which fresh salmon is expected to mainly come from Norway and Chile, while the frozen salmon is expected to mainly come from Chile.
