Chillers have become an essential HVAC component of a wide range of commercial facilities, including hotels, restaurants, hospitals, sports arenas, industrial and manufacturing facilities, etc. The industry has long acknowledged that chiller systems in most installations constitute the single biggest source of electrical use. Over seasonal periods, they can easily consume more than 50 percent of total electrical consumption. According to the US Department of Energy (DOE), chillers can combine to use around 20 percent of North America 's total electricity generated. In addition, the DOE estimates that chillers can spend up to 30 percent on additional energy use due to different operational inefficiencies

In general, a chiller facilitates heat transfer from an in-house environment to an outside environment. This heat transfer device is based on a refrigerant's physical state, as it circulates through the chiller system. Chillers could then function as the core of any central HVAC system. The air-cooled chillers rely on an air-cooled condenser. Air-cooled chillers can find common application in smaller or medium sized installations where space restrictions may exist. In scenarios where water is a scarce resource, an air-cooled chiller could represent the most practical choice.

The propeller fans or mechanical refrigeration cycles of a traditional air-cooled chiller can draw ambient air to condense the refrigerant over a finned coil. The condensation of the refrigerant vapor within the air-cooled condenser allows heat transfer to the atmosphere. Air-cooled chillers offer the substantial benefit of lower installation costs.

Simpler maintenance also results in comparison to water-cooled chillers, due to their relative simplicity. Air-cooled chillers will take up less space, but will mostly reside outside of an installation. The outdoor elements will thus negatively impact their functional durability. The all-inclusive nature of air-cooled chillers lowers the cost of maintenance. In many types of installations their simple structure combined with reduced space requirements offers great advantages.
