Recirculating chillers are used for cooling laboratory equipment such as rotary evaporators. Chillers are available in various types of cooling capacities, reachable temperature ranges and reservoir quantities. Applications include separation, control of chemical reactions, spectroscopy and laboratory automation.

Recirculating chillers focus on providing cooling to remove mechanical or electrical heat produced in or generated by an exothermic reaction. They also facilitate the temperature checking of electronics in vacuum chambers, heat exchangers, jacketed reaction vessels, plastic molding, extrusion and plasma etching. In the healthcare industry, recirculating chillers cool lasers and medical imaging machineries.

The process of heat removal is accelerated by combining the circulation of the coolant with a high-pressure flow. The chiller's power is measured in watts; the higher the power, the faster is expected to be the heat removal rate. Like all chillers, the recirculating chiller systems consist of a compressor, a condenser, a thermostatic expansion valve and an evaporator. A refrigerant gas is injected into a compressor where, under high pressure, it is converted from a compressed gas to a high temperature and a high-pressure gas. It then travels to the compressor, where it is cooled down and condensed into a liquid.

This occurs as the ambient air or water takes the heat of the refrigerant. Next, it passes through the expansion valve, where the pressure and temperature drop below the point of the process fluid. Because of this, the heat is transferred to the fluid, which causes evaporation. Then the cycle begins all over again when the gas returns to the compressor.
