The growth of the biopesticides market is anticipated to record a CAGR of 4.6% during the forecast period (2020-2025). As a part of China’s plan of zero growth of pesticides consumption till 2020, greater effort is set for the development of biopesticides to lessen the dependence on harmful chemical pesticides, and also, to enhance sustainable agriculture in the country. The first rank in the field of biopesticides R&D, worldwide, was recently claimed by China. Therefore, the country already possesses a complete system of biopesticides, including microbial pesticides, biochemical pesticides, botanical pesticides, agricultural antibiotics, and biological pest control. Despite relatively weak commercialization, China’s registration of biopesticides is rising continuously. Especially, the registration of microbial pesticides is facing a large increase in the current time. The swelling cost of chemical inputs, their adverse effect on soil health and environment, and the increasing awareness regarding balanced plant nutrition are the major factors driving the market demand in the country. The country is adopting the use of microbial for seed treatments, to strengthen crop productivity at an early stage.

Key Market Trends

Increased Demand for Organically Grown Products

The demand for organic food in China grew considerably over a couple of years due to rapid socio-economic development accompanied by modernization and the industrialization of agricultural food production which creates demand for organic food. Organic food products are of particular interest among the food products for a Chinese consumer with increasing awareness regarding the benefits of organic products and growing disposable income. Over the last few years, both the demand and production of organic food products have increased in China, which in turn will boost the biopesticides market during the forecast period, as biopesticides are extensively used for organic crops. In response to the growing need to meet food sufficiency and the importance of safe farming practices, the organic food industry is growing exponentially at a double-digit growth rate. In response to consumers’ demands for healthy food products with minimal environmental impacts, growers are looking for more efficient ways to use synthetic chemicals and mineral fertilizers.

Ease of Registration Process Drives the Market

Given that biopesticides tend to pose fewer risks than chemical pesticides, the EPA generally requires less data to register a biopesticide than to register a chemical pesticide. As a result, new biopesticides are often registered in less than a year, compared to an average of more than three years for chemical pesticides. In China, biopesticide refers to biochemical, botanical pesticide, microbial pesticides, biochemical pesticide and pest-resistance GMO crops. The numbers of active ingredient and biopesticide products have grown by 20% in the last couple of years in China. By the end of April 2014, the number of biopesticide active ingredients and products expressed as percentage of total pesticides registered with ICAMA were 14.2% and 3.6% respectively.Increasing number of registered biopesticides products in China will boost the biopesticides market during the forecast period. To promote the use of biopesticide, developing countries have simplified the requirement for the registration of biopesticides. These countries are also providing grants for R&D and production unit setups. All these activities are creating an opportunity for the development of the biopesticide market
