The North America feed antibiotics market is projected to register a CAGR of 2.9% during the forecast period(2020-2025). Industrialization, increasing animal disease, expansion of the meat market are the major factors for attractiveness in this region. The feed antibiotics are used in the livestock industry to obtain a high feed efficiency rate and to prevent and treat disease in the herds of animals or in an individual animal. Tetracyclines, Penicillins, sulfonamide, macrolides are some of the major antibiotics used in the livestock industry. The United States dominates the market owing to the higher demand for meat and the mass production of livestock. The usage of the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) drug in farm animal feed requires authorization by a licensed veterinarian, according to the agency’s VFD regulations. However, the ban on the use of antibiotics, apart from therapeutic use in the United States, has hampered the market growth. Some of the leading players in the market are Merck & Co., Inc., Elanco, American Regent, Inc., Boehringer Ingelheim Mexico., and Alltech Inc.

Key Market Trends

Increasing Feed Production Drives the Market

Regular use of antibiotics as feed additives can reduce the risk of disease and increase nutrient-intake efficiency. The improved efficiency gained through antibiotic use decreases the amount of feed. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), in 2016, cattle and buffaloes population in the region was 103.49 million that increased to 105.86 million in 2018. Also, the poultry population was 2402.3 million in 2016 which increased to 2403.6 million in 2018. Thus the growing population and health concern creates demand for quality feed which includes antibiotics. According to the Alltech survey in 2016, feed production in the United States was 169.7 million metric tons that increased to 177.2 million metric tons in 2018. Also, in 2019 the production reached 214 million metric tons, of which beef feed production amounted to 61 million metric tons. This will thus drive the market further during the forecast period.

United States Dominates the Market

Meat, particularly beef, is the centerpiece of the average American dinner. According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the year 2018 set a record of 222.2 pounds per capita of animal meat being consumed in the country, breaking the previous year’s record of 216.9 pounds per capita. The growing consumption of meat would stimulate the production of cattle, which, in turn, would bolster the US feed antibiotics market during the forecast period. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), in 2016, cattle and buffaloes population in the United States was 91.88 million that increased to 94.2 million in 2018. Additionally, the poultry bird population in 2016 was 2225.07 million that has raised to 2225.5 million in 2018. In 2016, Elanco gained U.S. approval for two new animal-only antibiotics in pork and poultry, namely Inteprity and Kavault, giving producers new alternatives to protect animal health and well-being without potentially impacting antibiotic treatment outcomes for people. The products prevent mortality caused by necrotic enteritis in poultry.

Competitive Landscape

The North America feed antibiotics market is consolidated with few major players like Bayer Health care, Merck Animal Health, Boehringer Ingelheim International GmbH, Alltech Inc., and Elanco accounting for more than 50% of the total market share. The companies follow mergers and acquisitions, expansions, investment in R&D are some of the few most adopted strategies by these players in expanding their business. Some of the leading players in the market are Merck & Co., Inc., Elanco, American Regent, Inc., Boehringer Ingelheim Mexico., and Alltech Inc. In February 2019, Merck Animal Health has expanded the capacity of its facility in Millsboro, Delaware.
