The Canadian compound feed market is projected to register a CAGR of 3.7% during the forecast period (2020-2025). The growing demand for meat and animal products is the major driving factor behind the growth of the compound feed market. Increased awareness regarding quality meat and milk products and increased livestock production are other factors augmenting the growth of the market studied. The country's biofuel industry allows more grain input in livestock production, giving Canada the advantage of lower feed cost, which, in turn, is significantly augmenting the sales of the market studied. Some of the companies like Cargill Inc, Alltech Inc., Canadian Organic Feeds Limited, Trouw Nutrition Canada, and Paragon Feeds Corp are dominating the market.

Key Market Trends

Growing Inclination Towards Meat and Animal Sourced Products

An increase in demand for various animal products, such as milk, dairy products, meat products, eggs, and other non-food items, has led to the growth in the usage of feed additives, thereby, boosting the growth of compound feed in the animal feed market. According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) beef and veal, export was 398,580 tonnes in 2018 an 5.2% increase from 2017. The export value was totaled to 2.75 billion. The rising demand for animal products and processed meat has created an opportunity for feed manufacturers to enhance animal productivity. According to OECD, Per capita, meat consumption in Canada is increasing annually, among which poultry is the highest consumed. Poultry meat consumption in 2016 was 33.3Kg and has been increasing continuously and reached 33.9 Kg in 2019.

Commercial Livestock Production Driving the Market.

The per capita consumption of red meat and poultry products has increased rapidly, as it is actively considered as an important source of nutrition/protein by the consumers under different demographics. In response to globalization and the rising demand for animal-sourced foods, the livestock sector attained a strong growth. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the poultry population in Canada was 178 million heads in 2018 compared to 177 million in 2016. The diets of livestock, primarily poultry and swine, contain highly digestible corn and soybean meal as base ingredients. Furthermore, in 2018, Enterra Feed Corporation received approval from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to sell Enterra whole-dried larvae in the country, as a feed ingredient for tilapia and poultry, including chickens, ducks, geese, and turkey. These sustainable alternatives are in high demand from feed manufacturers around the country, as the market for salmon continues to grow.

Competitive Landscape

Leading companies focused on acquiring feed mills and small manufacturing for expansion of the business in local as well as foreign markets. Some of the players have been expanding their geographical presence by acquiring or merging with the manufacturers in the foreign market. The leading companies focused on the expansion of the business across regions and setting up a new plant for increasing production capacity as well as a product line. The companies are also increasing production capacities of their existing plants. In 2017, Nutreco NV (a Netherland-based animal nutrition manufacturer) acquired Hi-Pro Feeds which is an animal nutrition supplier, supplying specialty feeds, premixes, concentrates, and commodity ingredients, especially in Western Canada and the Southwest United States. This acquisition has not only expanded Nutreco’s presence in the country but also has broadened its consumer base.
