  • Moreover, in Nov 2019, NXP Semiconductors, one of the world’s prominent provider of automotive semiconductors, announced an addition to its UWB portfolio with a new automotive UWB IC. The technology is primarily designed to give spatial awareness to the UWB-equipped cars, mobiles, and other smart devices, in order to enable cars to know exactly where the users are.
  • Further, it became apparent earlier that the social distancing is going to be the key strategy in combating the spread of the coronavirus. Lopos, which is a spin-off of imec and the Ghent University, in efforts to fight this virus, launched a wearable device called SafeDistance, that is based on the UWB technology, chosen over Bluetooth owing to its accuracy. After successful pilots at multiple companies in the chemical, metal and construction industry, the company said that it is now scaling up the device to mass production. The device warns employees through an audible or haptic alarm, when they are violating the social distancing guidelines while approaching each other.

The new regulations state that the 24 GHz frequency range will not be available for a bandwidth of 5 GHz, called as the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for automotive applications after 2022 as mandated by both the agencies.
  • Further, in Jun 2020, Continental received new production orders for its CoSmA smartphone-based vehicle access system from multiple vehicle manufacturers from the European and Asian region. The smartphone-based car key will be integrated into the architecture of their upcoming vehicles. The company will begin the production in 2021. The CoSmA primarily uses ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology for an access solution that offers a hands-free system and enhances anti-theft protection.
