The automated Baggage Handling System comprises conveyor belts that support the central network of destination coded vehicles (DCVs). In opposition to the traditional conveyor system, the bags do not move in continuation, from conveyor belts to the automated BHS. Every bag is positioned independently on its exclusive cart and therefore, needs to control carefully over the delivery of bags from conveyor belts.

Moreover, the conveyor belt cannot move until the cart is empty, onto which the main bag is placed. Therefore, the speed of the conveyor belt with the performance of the complete system depends on the critical coordination and proper functioning of the mechanical components in the BHS. There is always a high risk of technical issues in the automated BHS, like jammed baggage carts in the tracks and misbalanced baggage carts with conveyor belts strengthening the bags among others. These technical issues resulted in baggage damage and an operational halt of the complete system.

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the baggage handling system market growth and challenged the operational flow of the equipment system in the railway, airport, and marine sectors.
