Scope

  • On July 2, 2020, a group of 16 European banks from five countries - Spain, Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands -announced a European-level instant payment system called European Payments Initiative (EPI). The new solution aimed to create a unified payment solution for consumers and merchants across Europe, encompassing a payment card and a digital wallet and covering in-store, online, and P2P payments as well as cash withdrawals. The solution aims to replace domestic schemes for card, online, and mobile payments with a unified card and digital wallet that can be used across Europe. However, since banks from Spain, Germany, Finland, and Poland have withdrawn from the project, the idea of common card scheme was abandoned. The EPI Interim Company and the remaining participants are instead focusing on account-to-account instant payments for various use cases, all via a mobile wallet.
  • Interest in biometric cards is growing among French consumers as they provide enhanced security for in-store payments. In May 2022, Credit Agricole introduced a biometric card for contactless payments of EUR50 ($56.88) and above. On similar note, BNP Paribas also offers credit cards featuring biometric technology. The cards offer enhanced security as card holders can use fingerprint recognition instead of a PIN to verify their identity while making payments. A green or red light on the card indicates a successful or unsuccessful match with the card holder’s fingerprint.
  • The proliferation of digital-only banks is driving competition in the banking space, thus helping boost debit card holding. Revolut is an app-based bank that launched in France in December 2021. Similarly, in December 2020, BNP Paribas’ digital-only subsidiary Hello bank! launched a Visa-branded dual-functionality card called Hello Prime Virtual card to capitalize on the growing number of online payments.
