The global hazardous location air conditioners market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 2.90% over the forecast period to reach a market size of US$3,634.834 million in 2026 from US$2,976.613 million in 2019.

Hazardous locations are the areas susceptible to explosion or fire hazards due to vapors, flammable gases, combustible dust, flammable liquids, or ignitable fibers. Air conditioners are installed in hazardous locations to tackle these explosion threats. Whereas air conditioners in hazardous locations are designed to reduce heat accumulation within electrical enclosures, so as to maintain a safe operating temperature in these areas. Air conditioners are manufactured differently to tackle each of these threats. The air conditioning equipment primarily has two types of enclosures: one is Explosion Proof, and the other is Dust-Ignition Proof. The explosion proof enclosures should be capable of withstanding an explosion from a specified gas or vapor that may occur within it. For such an explosion, the enclosure must prevent the ignition of a specified gas or vapor within it. Furthermore, the enclosure’s external temperature must remain low enough so that it does not ignite the surrounding flammable atmosphere. Hence, the core cooling system of the air conditioners are subjected to a series of additional mechanisms where a metal or steel encasing is made for the system, the electrical circuitry is replaced with durable fire-resistant wires to safeguard the system from explosions. Each addition to the system adds value in terms of providing it with extra security against the threat prevalent in the location where the air conditioner will be used.

The Dust-ignition proof enclosures exclude the looming threat of flammable dust. This enclosure prevents arcs, sparks or heat that occurs within it from igniting exterior accumulations or atmospheric suspension of a specified dust. The air conditioner ducts are built with anti-dust settling coatings and are provided with airtight encasings in area within the unit that are not exposed to the external surroundings. Moreover, hazardous location air conditioning units are designed to operate in the most difficult application by providing safe air conditioning for equipment and personnel. These air conditioners reduce the heat accumulation and maintain a safe operating temperature in hazardous locations. Many features such as a temperature alarm, programmable thermostat and compressor are inbuilt in these air conditioners. These units are easy to install and require less maintenance when compared to traditional hazardous location units. These explosion proof air conditioners can serve all the hazardous divisions, classes and groups. The rising global energy demand has led to the establishment of oil and gas factories and coal industries. As the working environment is hazardous in these areas, the growth of these industries has augmented the demand for hazardous location air conditioners. Stringent government regulations regarding the workers’ safety in dangerous working conditions are also fuelling the demand for these machines and equipment. Growing aerospace and defence industry will propel the growth of hazardous location air conditioners market in the coming years owing to rising demand for air conditioning systems for tent cooling, guard booths and towers, research facilities, rocket launch locations, and missile silos among others. However, factors such as high installation costs and lack of skilled personnel will restrain the growth of the global hazardous location air conditioner market during the forecast period.

The global hazardous location air conditioners market is segmented on the basis of product type, location, industry vertical and geography.
  • On the basis of product type, the global hazardous location air conditioners market can be segmented into central air conditioners, ductless split systems, dehumidifiers, packaged terminal air conditioners (PTAC) and others.
  • On the basis of location, the global hazardous location air conditioners market can be segmented into class I and class II which are both further segmented into division I and division II.
  • On the basis of industry vertical, the global hazardous location air conditioners market can be segmented into chemical, oil and gas, mining, food and beverage, construction, manufacturing and others.
  • On the basis of geography, the global hazardous location air conditioners market can be segmented into North America, South America, Europe, Middle East and Africa and Asia Pacific.

Growth Factors
  • Growing demand for energy

The increasing demand for energy across the globe to complement the need for better equipment control in energy and the utility sector is expected to fuel the growth of the hazardous location air conditioners market. The global demand for energy will complement the need for better equipment control and cooling requirements in such locations where mishaps can turn into major debacles. Companies worldwide have realized that any setbacks due to a lapse in safety will destroy not only valuable capital, but also hard-earned goodwill and brand image in the market. This realization of precaution will be the most crucial driver for the global hazardous location air conditioners market. Some of the emerging applications include those in the entertainment sector, sports and recreation centres, outdoor automated electronic ticketing machines or kiosks, security and surveillance cameras, which are driving the market growth and is projected to drive significant growth throughout the forecast period.

Impact of COVID - 19.

The COVID-19 outbreak has led to the decline of industries, as governments of developed and developing economies have imposed lockdown, due to which the working of industries such as oil & gas, food & beverages, and chemicals have paused. This, in turn, has impacted production and manufacturing, and adversely affected the global economy. Thus, demand for hazardous location air conditioners has also been impacted.
