Development of Autonomous Trucks in the Global Mining Sector, 2026

Summary

The popularity of autonomous haul trucks is continuing to grow across surface mines, with miners taking advantage of improvements to productivity; reductions in accidents and operating costs; increased machine life and tyre life and lower fuel consumption.

As of July, 2026, GlobaData’s Mining Intelligence Center was tracking 5,684 autonomous haul trucks operating on surface mines across the globe. This figure includes both those that are autonomous-ready as well as running autonomously.

The largest population of autonomous trucks is in China with 3,843, followed by Australia, Canada and Chile.

'The largest population of autonomous trucks is in China with 3,843, followed by Australia, Canada and Chile.
Guanghui Energy accounts for the largest number of autonomous trucks, followed by CHN ENERGY Investment Group,Yankuang Energy Group, BHP and Rio Tinto.

China based Tonly is the leading OEM for autonomous mining trucks, followed by LGMG. Komatsu and Caterpillar are in third and fourth places. Other Chinese OEMs, including XCMG and Yutong, occupy fifth and sixth position. These six OEMs together account for over 90% of the known brands tracked.
