The publisher has revised its forecast for Chile’s construction industry downwards to 10.4% in 2021, compared to the previously projected growth of 11.6% for this year. The revised forecast reflects lower than expected construction activity in the first quarter of the year and a weak start for Q2 2021, as the government was forced to tighten restrictions to slow the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Over the remainder of the forecast period, the industry is set to grow by an average of 4.2%, helped by additional stimulus measures and government efforts to increase investment in infrastructure.

In August 2020, President Sebastián Piñera and the Minister of Public Works Alfredo Moreno launched the ‘Paso a Paso Chile se Recupera’, a public investment program worth over US$34 billion, in order to create over 250,000 jobs. Under the program, the government allocated CLP7.4 trillion (US$9.4 billion) to the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) to implement 2,130 projects in the next two years, including the replacement of over 7,500km of roads, 150 bridges and the maintenance and expansion of runways and movement areas over 10 airports and airfields, as well as port improvement works. The plan also seeks to facilitate private investment in infrastructure by streamlining the bidding and construction of 31 projects worth US$8.6 billion, of which a total of US$4.1 billion is expected to be implemented between 2020 and 2022.

Chile’s economic recovery is expected to be the strongest this year, among the largest markets in Latin America, thanks to its successful vaccination program, continued fiscal and monetary support and improving external conditions. China’s recovery, which is leading the world, has prompted a rebound in the price of copper, Chile’s main export, providing a boost to the country’s exports and wider economy. However, despite Chile’s world class vaccine program, COVID-19 cases have continued to accelerate across the country in the past months, increasing the risk of new or extended lockdowns, and threatening the recovery of the economy and industry in the short term. The publisher expects a strong rebound later this year, with part of the recovery expected for 2021 reflecting favorable base effects.
