Launched in 2009 in the US, Boku is one of the world’s leading carrier billing-based mobile payment services. Primarily used for purchases of digital content, Boku is offered by leading digital companies including Apple, Google, Sony, Microsoft, Facebook, and Spotify. Boku enables customers to charge payments directly to their mobile phone bill and provides merchants with the ability to accept payments from anyone with a mobile phone. In addition to carrier billing, Boku allows merchants to accept payments via over 225 mobile payment methods. Boku is now accepted in 75 countries and has partnerships with over 200 mobile network operators (MNOs). It has offices in the US, the UK, Germany, India, China, France, Latvia, Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan.

The platform has received around $86.8m in funding since its inception, with Benchmark Capital, DAG Ventures, Index Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and New Enterprise Associates (NEA) the major investors. In November 2017, Boku raised £45m ($61.48m) through an initial public offering (IPO) and commenced trading on the AIM sub-market of the London Stock Exchange. Investments in the company have supported its international expansion, as inorganic growth is the firm’s core strategy. To expand its business, it acquired payment service providers such as Danal in 2018, Mobileview Italia in 2015, mopay in 2014, and Qubecell in 2013. To strength its position in the direct carrier billing space, in 2020 Boku acquired its peer Fortumo, an Estonia-based carrier billing service provider.
