Modern mattress mainly contains innerspring or material such as latex, elastic, or other polyurethane type foams. A mattress can be additionally filled up with air, water, or natural materials. In past decades, people used to buy cotton or coir and then converted into the mattress. Thereby after diversity had changed and used rubber and latex.

In the healthcare industry, the demand for mattresses is increasing in nursing homes, clinics, and hospitals. The major players in the mattresses market in Europe have launched convenient, multifunctional hospital beds that are characterized by height adjustment and electronic-connectivity features. The sale of innerspring mattresses in Europe is anticipated to be consistent during the forecast period, contributing to more than 50% of the market share. The memory foam mattress segment is to show the highest growth as an individual mattress segment, yet having a low market share in the year 2019. Due to the COVID outbreak, the region saw sales drop because of the factories' temporary closures and supply chain problems. Post-COVID crisis, the market is expected to grow at a normal rate.

Key Market Trends

Trend of Recycling of Mattresses

Unlike other regions, the European mattress industry has been engaging in recycling for some time now with a number of small-scale recyclers, mostly manual dismantling mattresses and selling on the materials they produce.

These businesses have set up commercial deals with commercial retailers and manufacturers wanting to engage in recycling in order to be ‘green’ and who in most cases, pay them a gate fee. The total amount of mattresses being recycled this way is thought to be around 100,000 and gaining exponentially. In addition, a small number of local authorities have set up collection services and partnerships with recyclers.

Mattress disposal and recycling in the UK has been the subject of numerous reports in the past couple of years, including the one commissioned by the National Bed Federation. With an eye on reducing landfill and in particular high calorific waste in landfills including mattresses DEFRA and WRAP have also been exploring the options for diverting mattresses for landfill most of the reports came to a similar conclusion that the absence of legislation or government guidance may be one of the biggest barriers to banning mattresses from landfill and increasing recycling.

Residential Share to Continue the Bull Run

The number of households consisting of cohabiting couples along with children has increased by 25.6% or 14,068 between 2011 and 2016. The United Kingdom market traditionally has been one of the innerspring cores, but the foam is increasingly popular. The typical lifespan of a domestic mattress is roughly 8‐10 years, and legislation on mattress safety is regularly revised so that old mattresses quickly fall outside the safety boundaries set for fire, health, and other factors. These considerations and others, such as reduced performance, mean that recycling materials are generally more suitable than reuse. The mattress market is predominantly focused on production for domestic use.

Competitive Landscape

The European mattress market is highly competitive, with the presence of major international players. The market studied presents opportunities for growth during the forecast period, which is expected to further drive the market competition. With multiple players holding significant shares, the market studied is competitive.
