Most of hydrocarbon production in Colombia is supplied from onshore fields located in Llanos Orientales and Middle Magdalena Valley basins of Meta and Casanare states. Crude oil production in Colombia is expected to decline by an average of 5.6% in the next 3 years and reach over 676,300 barrels of crude oil per day per day (bd) by 2023. However, in 2024 production starts declining at a higher rate of 9.25% and is expected to reach a value of 545,000 bd in 2025, assuming no new projects are brought online to compensate. Around 62% of crude oil production comes from onshore heavy oil developments, while the remaining production is represented by conventional oil fields located in Upper Magdalena Valley basin. Natural gas production in the country accounts for only 16% of the overall hydrocarbon supply. Natural gas production is forecasted to decline at even higher rates and drop by more than 53% from 1,170 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) in 2020 to less than 540 mmcfd in 2025. Natural gas is the second largest energy source in Colombia. However, some estimates show limited amount of natural gas proved reserves left in the country, and hence active and more aggressive gas exploration program is needed to mitigate such steep decline.
