Guyana is a frontier area in South America, where commercial production of oil and gas started only two years ago. All the discoveries made in the country are located in the deep- and ultra-deep waters of the Guyana Suriname basin. Currently, all the Producing and Planned and Announced fields in the Stabroek block are operated by the Esso Exploration and Production Guyana consortium consisting of Exxon Mobil Corp. (ExxonMobil), Hess Corp, China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) with 45%, 30% and 25% equity respectively. Despite lower energy demand in 2020 caused by COVID-19 pandemic, production in Guyana did not decline, but surged to 66,000 barrels of crude oil per day (bd) from just 667 bd in 2019. It is estimated that crude oil production will reach well over 300 thousand barrels per day (mbd) by 2025, which is 3.5 times higher than Guyana’s production in 2020. Guyana is considered one of the most attractive regions for oil and gas investments in the world mainly because of its competitive fiscal regime and low full-cycle break-even price of the projects estimated at US$22 - US$34 per barrel of oil (bbl). Good economics is mainly due to excellent reservoir properties which allow wells to produce up to 63 million barrels of oil (mmbbl).
