Port wine is a type of fortified desert wine made primarily in the Douhro valley of Portugal. Because of its sweet and pleasant flavor, it is classified as a desert wine. There are two main types of port wines, ruby and tawny ports. Ruby ports have a fruity flavor and are aged for a maximum of three years in cement or steel barrels. This variety of port wine is mass produced and hence is readily available. Tawny ports have a complex nuts and dried fruit flavor that is obtained due to aging in wooden barrels in small batches. A lot of tawny ports fall under the premium category as they can be aged for many years and they develop more taste and body due to longer aging.

Wine, when consumed in moderation is considered to be healthy. Wine is said to positively impact many aspects of health due to its inherent properties. Red grapes are high in antioxidants, and converting them into wine is said to bring out these antioxidants for easier use by the body. One of the components of grapes, proanthocyanidins, are also present in wine and they are said to reduce risk of certain cancers and help in keeping the body fit. Wine is also said to be effective in reducing bad cholesterol levels in the body, which reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The polyphenols present in wine are also said to increase heart health and avoid risk of heart attacks. Wine can also help in reducing and regulating blood sugar levels and treating colds and coughs. Consumption of wine can lead to a better memory and reduction in weight and depression. Many of these claims of wine consumption have not been scientifically proven yet, but the belief of the consumer on the health benefits of wine to positively impact market growth.
