The publisher's 'Global Cobalt Mining to 2025' provides a comprehensive coverage on the global cobalt industry. It provides historical and forecast data on lithium production by country, production by company, reserves by country, world cobalt prices and trade. The report also includes a demand drivers section providing information on factors that are affecting the global cobalt industry. It further profiles major cobalt producers, information on the major active, planned and exploration projects.

Demand for cobalt is expected to rise significantly over the coming years, due to its use in lithium-ion batteries and the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs). The metal is typically mined as a by-product of copper or nickel, with over half of the global reserves found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Global cobalt production was estimated to have reached 140 thousand tonnes (kt) in 2020, of which the DRC accounted for 73% of the total global. The global production fell by 2.8% in 2020, with a 4% drop in output from the DRC due to severe operational disturbances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the continued closure of the Mutanda mine, which accounts for 18% of global supply. Glencore and China Molybdenum Co. Ltd are the two largest cobalt producers in the world, together accounting for 26.1% of global cobalt production in 2020. Global metal demand is mainly driven by the electric vehicle (EV) industry, as cobalt is a key component for the lithium-ion batteries used in EVs. In 2020, global EV (including both battery electrical vehicles and plug-in hybrid electrical vehicles) production reached 2.4 million, and is forecasted to reach 3.8 million in 2021.
