The global basic chemicals market forecast was valued at $649.8 billion in 2020, and is projected to reach $949.1 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 3.9% from 2021 to 2030.

Basic chemicals are usually produced in large quantities and these chemicals are crucial products that will be used in the industrial and consumer sectors. Basic chemicals are mainly grouped into two categories such as organic and inorganic chemicals. These chemicals are used as processors in industries such as plastic, food & beverages, building & construction, agriculture, and others. Acetic acid, ethanol, phenol, urea, and ethylene are types of organic chemicals. Ammonia, chlorine, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and sodium carbonate are some types of inorganic chemicals.

The growth of the global basic chemicals market is driven by increase in adoption of inorganic chemicals in pigmentation, pharmaceutical, and chemical industry. Acid, bases, salts, and water are considered as inorganic chemicals that can be utilized for various applications, owing to their properties such as conductivity, catalysis, and reactivity. Inorganic chemicals are used in applications such as manufacturing of fertilizers, industrial & household cleaners, solders, paints, sheet metal, lead batteries, and fire retardants in textiles & composites. Liquid caustic soda is a strong alkaline inorganic chemical that is utilized in applications such as chemical fibers, paper & pulp industry, wastewater treatment plant, and as a food additive. Ammonia is an important raw material that is used as an intermediate chemical compound during production of fertilizers. In addition, it is widely used as refrigerant gas, production of plastic products, explosives, and dyes Thus, all these factors together are predicted to augment the growth of the basic chemicals market.

However, fatty alcohols are type of oleochemicals that have several health-related issues such as burning, stinging, redness, or irritation, which may occur if they are come in contact with skin. In addition, serious allergic reactions may occur, which include swelling of face, tongue, throat, and severe dizziness. This may occur if a person is exposed to these alcohols for a longer period of thime. These factors are predicted to hamper the market growth.

Use of formaldehyde for prevention of fabric wrinkling and water-proofing agent is the key market trend. In addition, it is also used to enhance the color fastness characteristics of the textile products. Chlorobenzenes are another important chemical compounds that are used during the dyeing process as levelling agents is driving the demand of the global market. Inorganic chemicals such as aluminum chloride anhydrous, sodium nitrite solution, sodium metabisulfite, and sodium sulfite are used in textile industry for carbonizing wool and oxidation of colorings. Finished fabric products need to be protected against excessive reduction during printing and coloring process. Thus, sodium nitrite solution is used along with vat dyes to help protect fabric products against excessive reduction. This factor is anticipated to offer new opportunities during the forecast period.

The basic chemicals market is segmented on the basis of type, end-use, and region. On the basis of type, the market is categorized into organic and inorganic. By end use, the market is divided into chemical industry, food & beverages, textile, pharmaceuticals, pulp & paper, polymer, and others.
