The global meningitis imaging market was valued at $164.70 thousand in 2020, and is projected to reach $243.72 thousand by 2030, registering a CAGR of 4.0%. Meningitis is an infection of the meninges that covers the brain and spinal cord. It is a highly fatal disorder caused by bacterium, Neisseria meningitides. Three membranes that are covered by bacteria include the dura mater, which is a dense outer layer; the arachnoid mater, a thin middle layer; and pia mater, which is a very thin layer that lies directly on the spinal cord and brain. Brain and spinal cord swell due to the bacterial and viral infection around it. The brain injuries, cancer, and infectious diseases are reasons to cause meningitis. It can lead to life-threatening blood poisoning and leads to damage of brain and nerves. There are several types of meningitis such as bacterial meningitis, viral meningitis, and fungal meningitis.

Bacterial meningitis spread via certain foods like unpasteurized dairy and deli meats, this factors cause meningitis. In addition, the Center for Disease Control states that bacterial meningitis spreads from person to person. It can affect anyone, but it is most common in babies, young children, and young adults. Bacterial meningitis is more severe and may lead to long-term complications and is most common in infants under the age of 1 year and in adults with the age of 16-21. The most common symptoms of bacterial meningitis are rashes on skin, painful stiff neck, and seizures.

There are several diagnostic imaging procedures, which show images of brain and detect the infection. CT scanning is frequently the most effective approach for diagnosing meningitis. It is a painless, noninvasive process and can disclose internal injuries and bleeding early enough in an emergency situation to help save lives. It is a method used in radiology to provide comprehensive pictures of the body for diagnostic reasons. Cross-sectional images produced by a CT scan can be reformatted in several planes and even three-dimensional (3D) images can be produced that can be seen on a computer display, printed on film, or transmitted to electronic devices Moreover, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may show inflammatory changes in meninges. This imaging procedures gives more information about meningitis infection.

Growth of the global meningitis imaging market is majorly driven by rising geriatric population and increasing meningitis cases in the overall population. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MRI) imaging are widely used to aid in diagnosis of meningitis. About 3,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with bacterial meningitis each year and according to the Harvard Medical School in 2021, more than 80 million CT scans are performed in the U.S. each year, compared to just 3 million in 1980.

Increase in prevalence of meningitis is one of the major reasons that boost the need for meningitis imaging scans. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), meningitis caused an estimated 2,50,000 deaths in 2019. World Health Organization with its global partners involved in meningitis prevention and control which led the development of strategies to defeat meningitis by 2030. In addition, Neisseria meningitis is found worldwide, but the rise in occurrence of “meningitis belt” of sub-saharan Africa results in propels the market growth. Moreover, in 2020, Hyperfine Research received the US FDA approval for portable MRI technology, the Swoop device. Thus, rise in development of imaging systems to determine efficacy of treatment of meningitis is anticipated to drive growth of the meningitis imaging market.

In addition, technological advancements for development of new products, growing patient emphasis for early detection of diseases, rise in global prevalence of various types of meningitis disease, coupled with an aging population and newborns, increase in preference for minimally invasive diagnostic procedures, and rise in benefits of CT, PET, and MRI scans over other imaging modalities are anticipated to drive growth of the meningitis imaging market.

On the contrary, high cost of installation of diagnostic imaging instruments and their maintenance, lack of reimbursement in some countries, and radiation from imaging procedure can lead to adverse side effects these factors are expected to hinder the growth of the meningitis imaging market.

Emerging markets and significant R&Ds to develop efficient imaging instruments, innovation of various systems and unmet demand in the under developed and developing countries is projected to provide substantial growth opportunities for key players in the meningitis imaging market.

The global meningitis imaging market is segmented onto the basis of product type, disease type, end user, and region. On the basis of product type, the market is categorized into, magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET).
